Escaping with VLBW neonates: caring for and transporting very low birth weight infants during a disaster.
AUGUST 29: HURRICANE KATRINA LANDFALL: I am a neonatologist in private practice and had been at the hospital for 24 hours along with 40 other physicians. I had volunteered to take care of the patients at Memorial Medical Center (MMC) during Hurricane Katrina. There were 16 infants in the NICU, 260 patients in total at the hospital, 500 essential employees, and 1200 family members of the patient...
متن کاملRickets in low-birth-weight infants.
Although the lesions did not show a vascular distribution, they did seem to be related to the level of the arterial catheter, which was above the diaphragm in both infants. The disinfectant solution used by us was 0-5% chlorhexidine in 70% spirit. This same preparation is used in our neonatal unit for all procedures-such as lumbar punctures, insertion of silastic catheters in preterm and term b...
متن کاملEnteral nutrition of the very low birth weight (VLBW) infant.
INTRODUCTION Optimal nutrition is critical in the management of the very low birth weight (VLBW) infant. METHODS The type of feeding, initiation, route and schedule of feeding, and the rate of increase in feeding volume were reviewed. RESULTS Human milk from the preterm infant's mother is the feeding of choice. When full enteral feeding is established, supplementation of human milk with a m...
متن کاملNatural History of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Very Low Birth Weight Infants after Discharge.
Data on the natural history of infants discharged with patent ductus arteriosus is sparse. We report on the 36-months follow-up after hospitalization in 68 infants discharged with an open ductus arteriosus. Notwithstanding a high spontaneous closure rate, catheter intervention in 5 infants illustrates a critical need for cardiologic follow-up.
متن کاملRECOMBINANT ERYTHROPOIETIN AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION IN VERY LOW BIRTH WEIGHT INFANTS
ABSTRACT Background: Very low birth weight infants ( <1500 g) frequently require blood transfusions because of repeated blood sampling accompanied by anemia of prematurity. Methods: In an attempt to identify the effect of human recombinant erythropoietin to decrease the requirement for blood transfusions, erythropoietin was administered to 24 pre term infants less than 1500 g prospectively fro...
